<p><strong>4 things to know about booking a performer </strong>by Scott Youngberg.</p>
<p> <em>In response to the article “Five Essentials of Music Career Success,” by Peter Spellman (Courtesy of Dave Feder.)</em></p>
<p> </p>
<p>As a performer, I think very “locally.” I have annual events that lead me off The Rock, but I play most of my calendar here in Key Largo / Islamorada. The article got me thinking about how different the public’s perception is from the performer’s own life experience.</p>
<p>Let’s say that you have a favorite local performer, and you’re having a party. This party could be at your home or in a rented room. You’ve thought, “Wouldn’t it be great if I could get * <em>favorite performer </em>* play?” but never pick up the phone.</p>
<p> We like to work, and you might be surprised how easy it can be to liven up your event. Considering the cost of keeping a large group’s plates and glasses full, Live entertainment is a bargain these days…</p>
<p>It’s the age of information and you can book many musicians by email or website contact!</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>1. Don’t assume that the entertainer you want to hire is too busy or too expensive.</strong></p>
<p>“It never hurts to ask.” Many performers represent themselves and therefore make their contact information easily accessible. There is a good chance that a local musician will charge a local resident less than they would a corporate gig or private party for tourists. Any performer “worth their salt” recognizes the community that supports them and will do their part to give back. The squeaky wheel gets the oil, so let them know.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>2. Try to find a schedule and book on an “Off Day.”</strong></p>
<p>Performing musicians keep a calendar, usually scheduled with weekly work at different venues. Clubs pay less than private events. There are many reasons, including public exposure where people are gathered, a pre-set food & beverage tab for the performer, an actual stage ready with power (and sometimes lighting,) and the ability to make tips and sell merchandise.. The main reason for a lower pay scale is the security of a steady work schedule, and loyalty still goes a long way for long term bookings with a history!</p>
<p>A performer will re-schedule a standing gig for, you guessed it, money. Try to book them on a day that doesn’t cause a re-schedule they might accept a lower offer.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>3. If your event is on a date you know the performer is already booked, ask anyway but give advance notice.</strong></p>
<p>No less than a month, and that’s tight. 2 or more months’ notice can allow for schedule juggling, again, for money.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>4. If you have spoken with the performer about an event, but decided against it, let them know.</strong></p>
<p>Confirmations happen all by themselves. “Un-confirmations” don’t. They just hang in space. If the date was “in pencil,” a more ruthless person will just sell the date. Another will take the time to track you down to see if it’s on or off. Neither is guaranteed. While a musician’s night mare is to not show up for the show, showing up when there is no show isn’t that great, either.</p>

<p>So the "Season is off to a great start here in the Keys. The Weather has been fantastic. (Sorry everywhere else - I know it's been rough...)</p>
<p>Steve Venini has been kind enough to join me on the Beach Stage at Morada Bay Pierre's this year, along with Dave Brigham's Rhythms.</p>
<p>The Green Turtle Jams on the Thusday night/Friday mornings are getting hard to keep up with, since I work both evening around them but I stiil go. It's so much fun and , hey, I need some people to sit in and record with me soon. What better place to hear so many talented people in one room. Good job Tony, Dave, and the Green Turtle staff!</p>

<p>So, island life has it's down-side. Complacency. I lit a fire under myself, on purpose. Now I'm jumping around again...</p>
<p>All that is just a metaphor, meaning that I'm writing again. I've found that I have a thing or two to say, as well. I've just worked up a song called, "Middle Age Sane," and I'm really happy with it. Considering that I am my own worst critic, that's actually saying something. Suzi has had it stuck in her head already, which is a great sign. I'll post the lyrics as soon as I can post the song, too.</p>
<p>I am always having ideas, but keeping track of them and then "fleshing them out" requires discipline. I want to write a song in 5/4 time, next. We'll see...</p>
<p>Now that I'm not smoking anymore, I will be digging out some older lyrics that never got a melody assigned to them... It's a song about "the other woman," and it'll be called "Nicotine."</p>
<p>Even if inspitation happens to come from The Dark Side, it's still inspiration...</p>

<p>I'm happy to be stepping in to Sundownwer's "Songwriter's Showcase" on friday nights. It's always nice to have a platform for playing the original stuff. Bay Jam was a great warm-up for it...
I'll be there May 2nd and 9th from 6:30 - 10:00, coinciding with the Key Largo Songwriter's Festival.
I'll have more on that... as soon as I get my time slots.</p>
Scott Youngbergtag:scottyoungberg.com,2005:Post/61113532009-04-19T20:00:00-04:002023-09-22T14:08:50-04:00Bay Jam was.... Amazing!
<p>I took the stage a little after noon to get things started. Great crowd - great set. John McKinna joined me with his flute for my closing song,"John Barleycorn Must Die." His biting flute style is etherial... apparently there were quite a few fans of Traffic on the lawn...</p>

<p>Good news folks!
I will be performing at the Guy Harvey Oceanic Foundations fundraiser this year on Oct 29th. Looks like I'll be up at the IGFA's (International Game Fish Association) Headquarters and Hall of Fame a lot this month.<br style="display:none" gauntlet_tokenizer_reserved="">
It's up in Dania Beach, and it's not a cheap ticket, but if you would like to attend - here is your invitation!
<a href="http://www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi8vczExNy5waG90b2J1Y2tldC5jb20vYWxidW1zL283NC9zY290dG5zdXppL1Njb3R0Lz9hY3Rpb249dmlldyZjdXJyZW50PUdIT0YuanBn" target="_blank" data-imported="1"><img src="http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o74/scottnsuzi/Scott/GHOF.jpg" class="size_orig justify_inline border_" alt="Photobucket" /></a>
I'll be there for their Mortgage Burning Party, the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and now, this as well.<br style="display:none" gauntlet_tokenizer_reserved="">
I will be playing the guitar that Wyland painted on for the first time since! (It lives on my living room wall these days...)

<p>Busy. Bay Jam 14 was phenomenal. Another crazy Full Moon Party at Pierre's / Morada Bay. Earth Day Benefit at Cheeca Lodge. Weddings and Parties. It's deinitely Season...
(A little laconic, I know. That about covers it, though.) </p>

<p>Whew! This has been a whirlwind trip. After planning and "executing" Dad's 60th Birthday Party, Christmas with Three Families, the ABC television spot and planning for New Year's, I find myself with a few moments in the Hotel Suite while Suzi's getting ready.
The TV studio has gone all digital and the experience was amazing! All of the many cameras were robotic and controlled from another room. Don Welch is a terrific host and it was neat seeing all the sets in the huge studio room.
I am getting copies of the raw and edited footage, so I'll be posting it soon.
Check back...
(... gotta head out to go bar-hopping in downtown Chattanooga now - hooking up with the whole gang...)</p>
Scott Youngbergtag:scottyoungberg.com,2005:Post/61113472007-11-27T19:00:00-05:002023-09-22T14:21:12-04:00TV spots galore...
<p>Well, my TV commercial has been running all this month up in Miami/Dade county, and will run in Key West through December. You can see the low-quality YouTube version on my front page.
I will be taping a segment for the "This'n'That" show with Don Welch, ABC, Chattanooga. The interview and performance will air on ABC in Chattanooga at 12:30 Noon on December 28th.
I'll get a copy to post up to my various websites, including MySpace.
Pretty exciting stuff...</p>
Scott Youngbergtag:scottyoungberg.com,2005:Post/61113462007-09-16T20:00:00-04:002023-09-22T14:22:03-04:00"Closed for the holidays.."
<p>Sorry folks, but I will NOT be booking any shows from Dec. 17th through Jan. 2nd. Suzi and I will be in Chatannoga, TN, being company instead of having company. It my Dad's 60th Birthday, Family parties (on both sides,) Xmas and New Year's Day. I might book one or two shows up that way, but will not even be in the Keys. I hope everyone has a relaxing holiday season this year, I know I will!</p>

<p>I am officially a part of the line-up for Bay Jam this year. I say "officially" because last years set was completely impromptu. (I played but was not on the T-shirt.)
I will be kicking off the show as the opening act, starting at 11:00 - 11:30 am. While the major portion of the crowd will arrive later in the day, I do encourage you, my friends, to arrive early. Not only will you get to see my set, but you'll be able to get a good spot on the lawn without fighting the crowd. ;-)
I don't know the whole line-up yet, but Dave Feder and Jocelyn Celaya will perform as well. They are both in my friends on myspace so check them out.
I'm looking forward to it because my whole set will be original and specifically featured songs, rather than a stream of cover tunes! also, I can't wait to play in the new TIB Amphitheatre.
Come out, come early - hope I'll see you there.</p>

Thank you, Scott, for all of your participation during the event! We all enjoyed your music so much. We will be back in town next week, Thursday, 3/22 through Sunday, 3/25 as Wyland adds the final touches to the wall that were delayed due to the rain. We will have our gallery and foundation tents up as we did before. If you are available and would like to come out and play, we would love to have you. Your music really adds a lot to the event.
Thank you again for everything and I look forward to seeing you again soon.
Best,

Scott Youngbergtag:scottyoungberg.com,2005:Post/61113432007-02-12T19:00:00-05:002023-09-22T14:23:20-04:00Wyland, Arlo Guthrie, Miami Ink... what a month!
<p>I am having my first day off for this month! (sort of - there's still all that "life stuff" needing to be caught up on.) It was great getting to know Wyland and the foundation staff, and playing my music. I got rained out at Morada Bay on Sunday so I called Dave Feder and he put me to work as Door Security for the Arlo Guthrie concert. After meeting Arlo Briefly, guess who showed up for the concert - Wyland. I was nothing more than a little "grease on the wheels," but they were introduced by Brownie Ballard and Arlo agreed to come out to the Wall Dedication.
The rain was basically a deluge but equipment was set up anyway and no one was electrocuted. After doing my short, opening set, Dave feder Played a few songs with his son, Nyan. Steve Turre (of the Saturday Night Live Band) blew the conch shell like I've never heard before.
Arlo gave his dedication speech but opted not to play because the rain got worse and ran everyone off after the ceremony. I don't blame him.
After being an "object at rest" for most of the summer, My momentum and inertia are fully in motion. Goerge from Miami Ink is considering using me for a Keys episode, since I plan to have the dolphin that Wyland drew in my guitar transferred to my skin at some point. I'll be sure to keep y"all updated.</p>
Scott Youngbergtag:scottyoungberg.com,2005:Post/61113422007-02-08T19:00:00-05:002023-09-22T14:23:49-04:00Wyland signed my guitar!!!!
<p>So, after many days of playing the live music for Wyland as he painted, He drew a dolphin on my Dean Key Largo guitar and signed it!
The official dedication ceremony for Wyland's new Wall will be on monday (12th.) I will be performing one more time, starting at 10:30 AM. There will be a ceremony around Noon and then Dave Feder (with Nyan "The Hurricane" Feder) will take the stage. There actually will be a stage this time. The music will continue well into the afternoon with other guests.
This will be the ONLY show that I will play the guitar that Wyland drew a dolphin on and signed. After that, it will be retired to a glass case.
I hope I'll see allof you out there,
Scott Youngberg</p>

<p>I don't know what to say except, "WAHOOOOO!!"
I just got off the phone with Marty Earlabaugh, the director of the Wyland Foundation. Wednesday, Feb. 1st, will be the press release and kickoff of Wyland's new Wall in Key Largo, and, I am the live entertainment as everything gets underway. Since Wyland attracts a rather large crowd, it gives me a chance to be heard by folks who don't make it out to the clubs and resorts where I perform. Since a large portion of my 2007 calendar consists of private parties, it will be nice to have such a public venue.
Everything will start at or before 12 noon on Thursday. As I get slotted for other times during the 2 weeks, I will post them on my website and MySpace bulletins.
I sure hope to see You there!</p>

<p>I want to thank everone who attended our "Annual when we're not travelling"" Hot Cider Party. To those who couldn't make it - You missed a good one. (Figures a bug would be going around town!)
We did Christmas lights worthy of the Griswolds out back and many thanks to all who got up and played music. All told, besides Suzi's wonderful food, we went through six gallons of cider and two gallons of rum!
All we did was set it up - You all brought the party! Thanks again and we'll do it again for sure.</p>

<p>Getting ready (once again) for another hurricane. Ernesto should arrive late tomorrow as a Category 1. We'll see how close the 48 hour prediction is to the actual event. Suzi is away on buisiness in Texas, so I get to meet this one alone.I'm ahead of the game at this point - the house is shuttered and ready. I need to prep the boat this afternoon and then start the waiting. I'll try not to spend too much time watching the news...</p>

<p>A few changes for the slower part of the year:
I will be picking up friday nights at Morada Bay. I will still Play at Cheeca Lodge when season comes around again but on a different night. My main summer Venues besides Morada Bay are Hawk's Cay Resort and MM 88 Restaurant. This will afford me some time to get back into the studio!</p>

<p>The annual food and music festival has a new, official name. Henceforth it will be called "The Florida Keys Island Festival," or simply, Island Fest. It has grown year after year and features local artists' crafts as well.

As I understand it, I'll be following Micah, and opening for Juice Newton.
Recording for "Rooted" is still under way, but slowly due to this incredibly busy season. 4 tracks down so far but no layering yet.</p>

<p>Well, that was an unexpected surprise! Thanks to Dave Feder for putting on such a great festival. I showed up around 1 pm to hear the music and immediately ended up on stage for a 20 minute set. Thanks Micah - nice Taylor. Thanks Islamorada Drummers for keeping my pace. Also Robyn Fear for providing and running the massive sound system. I guess I've officially begun promoting the new CD. Got two more base tracks down last night. Layers will start next week.</p>

<p>I'll be recording my new CD with... drum roll please ... Dave Feder, in his wonderful studio. I've got some time booked in March to get things under way and lay down some initial tracks. This will be a solo project mostly, but a few people have said they will sit in and add their talent to the recordings. Steve Webb will add a guitar track and maybe break out his fiddle. I'm trying to get my friend Brad Allen to come from Texas and be a part of it as well. Who knows? Maybe Dave will be inspired by one of my songs and add his hillbilly flamenco touch to it.
My working title is, "Rooted." It was inspired by one of Lauren Bacall's lines in the movie Key Largo. When asked why she was still in the Keys, her response was that she was like a mangrove tree and had put down roots. Right now it exists mostly on paper and in my head, but the only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. (poor elephant!) It will all come together in island time.
side note - My Amazing Live Sea Monkeys are flourishing in their starter tank. They have a "wrist aquarium" (bubble watch) that they sometimes travel around in with me. They are exactly like in the ads - little naked people that build whole civilizations! The Executive Set (fancy tank) is on the way.</p>
Scott Youngbergtag:scottyoungberg.com,2005:Post/61113342006-01-09T19:00:00-05:002023-09-22T14:33:02-04:00...In with the new!
<p>The Holidays were fantastic! We threw one helluva party New Year's Eve. My folk's left for the day while Suzi and I Decorated, cooked and got their house ready for our party. The whole Chattanooga gang (Friends and Family) were all there. We killed a case of Korbel, ending the festivities at almost four AM.
While there, we got to see the "last" show of our favorite band, The Floating Men. Jeff Bishop, and now Scott Evans, are both off to the far corners of the earth to pursue long term goals (or whatever.) But I'm sure Jeff Holmes will still be writing, singing and chasing snakes. { - check out their website in the "Links" section.} There are already rumors and murmurs about the "next" show.
This year looks to be the best yet for my music. My calendar is solid, Recording for "Rooted," my studio CD, begins soon.
Hopefully it will be complete by the end of this year. Look for me mainly at Morada Bay, Cheeca Lodge, Hawk's Cay and MM 88 this year.</p>

<p>It's been about 4 years or so since performing there, but I have booked 2 dates with MM 88 Restaurant. I will be playing and singing on the bayside beach there from 5 - 9:30 pm on January 21st and 28th. (Both are Saturdays.) Let's see if this turns into a regular thing or not... ;-)</p>

<p>I've been so busy since getting back from Jamaica that I haven't had a chance to update the website until now. Jamaica was... was... wonderful (as always.) It will be nice to head back to Chattanooga for the holidays this year. Taking time off for Christmas will be strange after so many years. I will be putting in my application for a spot in the Riverbend Music Festival this coming summer. As for now, it's time to brush up on all my Xmas songs.</p>

<p>Yes - we had hurricane problems but they were nothing compared to what other people have suffered this year, locally and elswhere. We stayed. It was intense. Wilma was one Big Bad Mama. I've posted a picture of our marina during the storm surge in the photo gallery (keys life section.)
We had a huge sea grape tree come down from our neighbor's yard and lost part of our fence. We are on the hospital grid in Tavernier, so our power was only out for most of one day. There were many power surges and we are waiting for electrical repair service on some circuits in the house, but we have cold air, TV, fridge and computer. Life is just fine.
I missed three shows but its back to buisiness as usual until the next one...?</p>

<p>They jumped the gun big-time on evacuating all the tourists. I'm not saying there's no danger, this storm is scary! My work week is canceled so there's plenty of time to get the house and boat prepared. (If such a thing can REALLY be done.) If Wicked Wilma is giong north of us we probably won't leave because you can't get back into the Keys after the storm passes. If, however, She is south of us or making a beeline at anything more than category two - We're going to run like Forrest Gump.
All we can do right now is wait and look at all our belongings, deciding what we can and can't live without.
We'll see...</p>

<p>We're headed to Naples for 1 day of work and just fun for the rest of the time. We'll be having Suzi's B-Day dinner at her favorite restaurant, Zoe's. Returning on the 6th.</p>

<p>Ok - so my "Guitar Elbow" was a lot worse than I thought. I could lift a 50 lb. speaker cabinet, but couldn't squeeze toothpaste! The anti-inflammatories and cortizone shot were not much help. 3 weeks of stretches, exercises and electro-therapy have made a world of difference. One more week and I'm done. I don't like to use my website as a forum for my personal problems, but I do have a point to make.
Why are we (all people) not taught these simple skills as a part of growing up. A simple regimen of stretching and light exercise could be the proverbial "apple-a-day." Anyone can do it, and if everyone did, It would save a lot in doctors' visits and medicines.

<p>I am experiencing my first case of aggravated tendonitis in my elbow. I actually had to cancel a few shows in order to rest it. Basically, I damaged my funny bone. A weeks rest plus the upcoming Jamaican trip should be enough time to heal and avoid getting a shot right in my elbow. I guess it's been a good season if I've been busy enough to hurt myself. I'll be up and running soon!</p>

<p>The kickoff was a great sucess as always. I always enjoy performing for "the best of the best of the best!" Mike Myatt had me come back again wednesday night as well.
Some talented people took home some mighty fine timepieces...</p>

<p>We've only run the new boat 3 times and have yet to spend the night out. Three things have to come together - A day off for Suzi, a day off for me, and good weather. SerenityNow is ready, we just need the opportunity.</p>
Scott Youngbergtag:scottyoungberg.com,2005:Post/61113242005-06-05T20:00:00-04:002023-09-22T14:29:23-04:00We Got It.
<p>It was sad to see her go, but Idle Hours is gone. She was hauled away with all the dignity she had left in her to make room for Serenity Now.
The new boat is a 26' Seaswirl Striper. It is completely rigged for serious fishing (2 live bait wells even,) so its ironic that we don't even own a fishing pole. Her selling point, for us, was the overnight package (Toilet, sinks, stove, fridge and so on...) I am loving the trim tabs!
Suzi and I haven't spent the night out on her yet, but our first two trips were very eventful including a vessel assist for a broken down jet-boat and her first "shakedown" on some 2 - 3 foot swells in wind and rain. How'd She do? I'll just wink and smile ;-)</p>

<p>Rob and Kristie - You were awesome! The fact that you were married in the Keys makes it a Keys Wedding automatically. But the coolie cups - "To have and to hold and keep your beer cold" - now THAT"S a Keys wedding!
Thanks for having me out - see you again next year.</p>

<p>One of my best friends from high school in Wheaton, IL was vacationing in The Keys and saw my name at Morada Bay on a night I wasn't performing. After I got the call, Suzi and I joined him and his wife (Whom I also knew - they just weren't a couple back then) for lunch in Key West. The Duval Crawl happened afterwards and I even played a few songs at Captain Tony's (See photo gallery.)
Grant and I spent almost every "open lunch" together (usually lasting at least two periods!), and along with his wife, Angie, we all performed together in Show Choir.
I'm a little fired up about my 20 year reunion this October. Chicago is a long ways away, but I'm going to do my best to attend.
Grant, Angie - It was great to see you again!</p>

<p>We have finally decided to put our boat, Idle Hours, on the market. She's still a great boat but We are ready for something brand new (and maybe a little bigger.) We haven't narrowed down our choice of new craft, But putting Idle hours for sale will be the first step. She will be marketed through the regular channels (newspaper, etc.) but I thought I'd post it here as well.
She's a 23' with cutty cabin and a 225 hp outboard. (See photo gallery.) She's ready for her annual service but starts right up and runs well.
$3,500 will make this boat your own!</p>

<p>Suzi and I have booked our 10 year anniversary trip. We'll be going back to Negril, Jamaica, which is where we tied the knot originally. August 1st is the big day - We'll be there from July 31st through August 3rd.</p>

<p>Cheeca Lodge is completing one of the nicest Tiki Bars I've seen.
It will include couch seating as well as padded barstools - and everything is brand new! With the new lounge furniture, it's almost like a Tiki Bar crossed with a Coffee House. All right on the beach.
(update 4/8 - Not that it's worth anything, but I got to order the first drink opening night. The guy who built it doesn't count!)</p>
